Improving adoption/foster flow for users seeking companion animals

Goldie and Papis' Animal Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that specializes in assisting cats and dogs in finding forever homes through adoption and foster care. Our goal was to redesign their site to help visitors have a nice experience while navigating the complexities that come with adopting or fostering an animal.
Goldie and Papis' page before our team's work
We dedicated three intensive week-long sprints to this project, strategically dividing tasks among research, experience design, and interface design. This approach not only ensured depth in each specialized area but also facilitated a seamless integration of all components, bringing our collective work together cohesively for a unified and impactful final product.
In our user interviews, invaluable insights emerged, painting a vivid picture of our audience's preferences and desires. A recurring theme was the universal desire for a furry companion, emphasizing the emotional connection users sought.
Fostering connections between Goldie and Papis and potential pet parents demanded a deep dive into our persona.
Additionally, participants expressed a strong preference for a design that immediately conveyed the lifestyle and needs of the animals. The ability to discern the behavior and personality of a potential pet at first glance emerged as a crucial factor in the decision-making process. Notably, participants highlighted the importance of an effortless appointment-making process, recognizing its role in enhancing the overall user experience. These key findings guided our design process, influencing decisions that ultimately prioritize the emotional connection, visual clarity, and user-friendly features of the website.
During user interviews and surveys, we uncovered legitimate concerns among individuals contemplating pet adoption, particularly regarding how a new pet would fit into their lives. A prevailing theme among participants emphasized the need for more personalized information about the animals, tailored to their individual circumstances.

The animal profile page gives the user important details all in one place.
These concerns sparked the concept of a pet questionnaire survey designed to match an animal based on a series of questions about the adopter and their lifestyle. We then conducted user testing of the prototype.
Our primary objective was to uncover any potential pain points in the user experience and highlight key features of the website. To achieve this, we crafted a series of tasks designed to simulate real-world scenarios for our users. These tasks included utilizing the Match Quiz to find a suitable pet for adoption, exploring the 'Recent Arrivals' section, delving into extended descriptions for available pets, accessing the Foster Application for a chosen pet, and locating contact information for someone within the organization. By engaging users in these tasks, we gained valuable insights into the user journey, enabling us to refine and enhance the overall website experience for optimal usability and satisfaction.
We aimed to present Goldie and Papis as a trusted and professional organization, with our design focused on radiating happiness and joy. Achieving this, we employed a palette of deep pinks and purples, complemented by generous white space and beautiful imagery

For the visual design, we employed AI to simulate professional pet photography, ensuring that the pets showcased their best sides. To cultivate a clean and appealing appearance on the homepage befitting an adoption organization, we utilized the same tool to craft a group photo featuring a selection of animals. Additionally, we strategically incorporated images capturing the heartwarming interactions between owners and animals, evoking a sense of the joy and fulfillment that comes with pet ownership.

Reflecting on the entirety of this project, our team has successfully navigated the intricacies of user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design to elevate Goldie and Papis' online presence. From the inception of the project, where we identified user concerns through interviews and surveys, to the implementation of a comprehensive pet questionnaire survey to address individual adopter needs, our approach has been user-centric and data-driven.
In the realm of visual design, leveraging artificial intelligence to simulate professional pet photography was a game-changer. The strategic use of vibrant deep pinks and purples, coupled with ample white space, created an inviting and joyful aesthetic on the website, aligning seamlessly with Goldie and Papis' identity.
Personally, this project has been transformative for my UX and UI skills. Navigating the challenges of designing a platform that not only addresses user concerns but also embodies the values of the organization has sharpened my ability to balance functionality and aesthetics. The integration of user feedback, iterative testing, and the application of AI in visual design have expanded my toolkit and deepened my understanding of creating user-centric digital experiences.
As we conclude this project, the lessons learned and skills honed will undoubtedly serve as a solid foundation for future endeavors in the dynamic and ever-evolving field of UX and UI design.
